Ozzy's fiesta de cumpleaños

The custom in Guatemala is to celebrate birthday's (fiesta de cumpleaños) on the weekend, so Sunday was set as the day for Ozzy's first official birthday party. We invited Irma and her family and Luis and his family. Something small in our hotel room...we thought. It turns out that twelve people in a two room suite is a big party (gran fiesta). Irma brought homemade fried pineapple pies, tamales and fried meat pies. Wonderful pineapple is in abundance here and as cheap as dirt. We bought pizza and wings (Guatemala meets America) and ordered a birthday cake from one of the best bakeries in Guatemala City...bad mistake. This was the worst cake Kimberly and I have ever tried to eat. This cake had the consistency of cornbread with caramel filling and marshmellow icing. It turns out that birthday cake is made very dry (on purpose) because it is meant to be eaten with ice cream. Ok, no one told me that, but it was still a very good evening.

We ate, opened presents, played with the kids and had a very nice visit. If we couldn't be home for Ozzy's first birthday this was a great second best place for a party and with good people.

Check out some of the pictures from Sunday.

First Visit to the Memphis Zoo

Sunday, February 1 was such a beautiful "spring like" day here in Memphis so we decided to have our first adventure at the zoo. Ozzy loved the animals, mostly the bears and monkeys. Enjoy the slide show above.
